Residents of Orange County – Do Not Get Swept Away with the Storm This Hurricane Season!

The 2016 Atlantic Hurricane season officially began on June 1st and will run until the end of November.  According to the Weather Company, an IBM business, the 2016 hurricane season is expected to be the most active since 2012.  Fourteen named storms have already been forecasted by weather professionals.

SERVPRO of North Orange County wants to make sure you and your family are safe and prepared in the event of a hurricane.

Below are several steps you should take to ensure you will be ready in the event of a storm:

  • Prepare an emergency supply kit

  • Stock up on batteries and water

  • Check to make sure your flashlights are all working

  • Ensure your generator is in good working order  

  • Clean out gutters and trims trees and shrubs

  • Inspect your roof, siding, foundation and basement to identify areas that need to be repaired or replaced

  • Check that your sump pump is working

 

You happen to hear on the television that a hurricane is supposed to be hitting North Orange County this weekend.  A few days prior to the storm you should:

  • Bring lawn furniture, trash cans and toys inside

  • Cover windows with 5/8 inch plywood that’s cut to fit and ready to install

  • Fill your gas tank

  • Park car in a garage or next to a building to protect from wind and debris

  • Charge your cell phone and other important electronics

During the storm it is important that you:

  • Listen to the radio or television for information

  • Avoid using the phone except for in emergencies

  • Stay inside unless you are told to evacuate

  • Stay away from windows and external doors

  • Keep your emergency kit with you

  • If water starts to come in your home, lift any clothes or valuable items to a higher place
